In the grand scheme of things, it was a little bit of light relief to read that a group of young Iranian men and women who released a Youtube video showing them dancing to pop star Pharrell Williams’s hit song “happy” have been sentenced to 6 months in jail in addition to 91 lashes.
While the sentence is a suspended one, Iranian authorities reportedly can impose it any time within the next three years. The video shows the group of men and unveiled women dancing on the rooftops in Teheran.
I think they got off rather lightly, don’t you. After all, there have already been a thousand executions this year for a vast array of misdemeanours. You don’t want to know the punishment for buggering the neighbour’s donkey. That’s mainly because there is no punishment for buggering the neighbour’s donkey. You think I’m joking? There’s a famous Iranian saying: one makes love to a woman in order to make babies, to a donkey for relief, and to a small boy for pleasure. So that’s all right then, because there are plenty of other “crimes” whose punishment results not in dilacerated penises, but in severed limbs. You have to hand it to those fun-loving mullahs – literally.
