U.S. Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt has called for the ouster of Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat. (Greenblatt was responding to Erekat’s invective against Israel and the Trump administration last month.)
“Dr. Erekat – we have heard your voice for decades and it has not achieved anything close to Palestinian aspirations or anything close to a comprehensive peace agreement. Other Palestinian perspectives might help us finally achieve a comprehensive peace agreement where Palestinian and Israeli lives can be better.” Greenblatt was writing in Haaretz.
What a breath of fresh air. This is the same Erekat who has lied consistently since kindergarten (remember Jenin-gate?). In 2002, false allegations of a “massacre” and “war crimes” against Palestinian civilians in Jenin provided the first example of a new type of warfare that exploited the principles of human rights. Erekat was the first to blurt out that 500 civilians had been “massacred”.The U.N. later confirmed that 52 Palestinians were killed in Jenin, as many as half of them civilians, and that 23 Israeli soldiers had also died in the fighting.
Erekat famously said during the second intifada that Palestinians were “prisoners of our culture”, the only words of truth he has ever uttered.
